Amsterdam Gesso Black is a high-quality primer that optimally prepares surfaces such as canvas, wood, or paper. This water-based acrylic primer dries to a matte finish and draws out excess moisture as it dries, creating a controlled, absorbent surface. This permanently improves adhesion and prevents subsequent acrylic or oil paintings from unintentionally soaking into the material. The dark base minimizes light scattering and highlights visible pigments, making subsequent color applications appear more vibrant and luminous.

The consistency can be flexibly adjusted by adding water, allowing for the application of multiple thin layers to smooth out surface imperfections. The black base serves as a starting point for negative techniques, more transparent glazing processes, or targeted outlining, where the background is intentionally preserved as a visual accent. It works on both pre-primed fabrics and untreated wooden panels, where it also acts as a protective layer against subsequent cracking of the paint system.

For extensive workshop tasks or regular studio use, the rapid setting time reduces unnecessary waiting periods between work stages. Thanks to the water-based formula, the medium spreads evenly with a brush or roller, leaving behind a uniform, non-glossy film. The 500 ml size is suitable for preparing several large formats in series without ongoing reorders interrupting the creative flow.
👉 Important: Ensure that each applied layer has dried completely to a porous finish before the next thinner layer of paint is applied to ensure an optimal finish and the long-term stability of the artwork.

Shipping Costs
For orders under CHF 50.–, we charge a flat shipping fee of CHF 5.20.
For order values under CHF 20.–, an additional small-order surcharge of CHF 10.– applies.
For order values of CHF 50.– and above, we deliver your order free of shipping costs within Switzerland.

What are the delivery costs?

For packages with a value of up to 50.00 Swiss francs, a delivery fee of 4.90 Swiss francs applies.
For orders over 50.00 Swiss francs, delivery is free of charge for customers.
In June 2025, we adjusted the delivery costs from 7.90 Swiss francs to 4.90 Swiss francs.

Every order incurs fixed costs (packaging, processing, payment systems). In order to cover these fairly while still offering our products at low prices, a small-order fee is necessary for orders under 20.00 Swiss francs.

How long will it take to receive my order?
The processing time for your order is generally 2–5 business days, including shipping time. During peak season (e.g., before holidays or during special promotions), it may occasionally take 1–2 days longer.

Where do our products come from?
For paints and art supplies, our products come exclusively from Holland, where the highest quality standards and precision in manufacturing are a matter of course.
We source our craft materials primarily from Germany and France, and occasionally from China when special materials or designs are produced there that enrich our range.
