Candle making – your step-by-step guide 🕯️✨

Candle Making – Your Step-by-Step Guide 🕯️✨
Homemade candles are more than just light – they are a touch of warmth that you can give as a gift or enjoy yourself. With this simple guide, your first candle project is guaranteed to be a success!
What you need
- 🕯️ Flat-top candles / Pillar candles as a base for decorating
- 🎨 Wax sheets for decorating in various colors
- 🧱 Stearin or paraffin pellets for pouring
- 🔥 Wicks (pre-waxed, with sustainers)
- 🧪 Wax dyes / color crayons for candles
- 🫙 Molds (cylinder, pyramid, star, etc.)
- 🌸 Modeling clay to seal the molds
Method 1: Pouring candles with paraffin or stearin
Step 1 – Melting the wax
Place your stearin or paraffin pellets into an old pot or melting crucible and heat them in a water bath to approx. 70–80 °C. Stearin becomes slightly firmer and matte – ideal for classic candles. Paraffin produces a smoother, slightly shiny surface.
💡 Tip: Never melt directly on the stove top – always use a water bath!
Step 2 – Adding color
As soon as the wax is liquid, add a wax crayon or wax dye and stir well. Start with a small amount of color – you can always add more. Pastel tones are achieved with a small amount, while bold tones require more.
Step 3 – Prepare the mold
Secure the wick over the center of the mold using a small wooden stick. Seal the bottom of the mold with modeling clay so that no wax leaks out.
Step 4 – Pouring
Pour the liquid wax slowly and evenly into the mold. Let it harden at room temperature – this takes 2–4 hours depending on the size.
💡 Tip: After the initial hardening, a depression often forms on top. Simply pour a little more wax to fill it!
Step 5 – Demolding & finishing
Once the candle has completely cooled, carefully remove the mold. Trim the wick to approx. 1 cm – done! 🎉
Method 2: Decorating candles with wax sheets
This method is particularly simple and ideal for children aged 6 and up – no melting required!
- Wax sheet warmed to room temperature (briefly hold in your hands)
- Cut out strips or shapes
- Press directly onto the flat-top candle and adhere
- Decorate with flowers, stars, or letters
Method 3: Pouring gel candles
Gel candles are transparent and particularly decorative – perfect as a gift!
- Melt gel wax in a water bath (approx. 90 °C)
- Place decorative elements (shells, flowers, glass stones) into a glass
- Secure the wick
- Slowly pour in the gel
- Let it set – finished!
Pro Tips 🌟
- Adding fragrance: Stir in essential oils or candle fragrances at approx. 60 °C (max. 3–5% of the wax weight)
- Layered candles: Pour different colors one after another – let each layer set first
- Marble effect: Briefly swirl two colors together before pouring
- Gift idea: Wrap finished candles in cellophane and tie with a craft ribbon 🎁
